Add another one 

 Remodeling of Sejong-ro Community Center

신축 건물인 것처럼 보이지만 세종로자치회관을 사직동주민센터로 리모델링한 프로젝트이다.

It may look like a new building, but it is a project that remodeled the Sejong-ro Community Center into the Sajik-dong Community Center. 

처음 이 건물을 가본 날을 기억한다. 어느 촉촉한 봄비가 내리던 날 다른 프로젝트때문에 회의가 있어 찾은 곳이 이곳 3층 회의실이었다. 주출입구 바로 옆에 있던 계단이 생각보다 좁고, 낮고, 낡기까지 해서 타임머신을 타고 80년대 즈음으로 거슬러 온 것 같았는데 3층 회의실 문을 열었을 때의 밝은 빛과 창문 너머로 경사지붕 집들이 보여서 ’역시 종로구’ 라는 감탄을 한 적이 있다.

The first visit to the building was memorable. It was a day with gentle spring rain, and the purpose was a meeting in the third-floor meeting room due to another project. The staircase next to the main entrance was narrower, lower, and older than expected, giving the feeling of traveling back to the 1980s. However, opening the door to the third-floor meeting room revealed bright light and a view of the sloped-roof houses through the windows, eliciting the exclamation, "This is indeed Jongno-gu." 

시간이 지나 현장조사로 방문한 이곳은 사람은 떠나고, 전기도 끊어지고, 누수로 여기저기 물이 새고 있어서 겁이 없다고 자부하는 나도 그 습하고 스산한 기운에 들어가기를 망설였다.

With time, revisiting the site for an inspection revealed a place now abandoned by people, with electricity cut off and leaks causing water to seep through various spots. Even someone who prides themselves on being fearless hesitated to enter due to the damp and eerie atmosphere.

프로젝트 시작은  뼈대를 되찾는 것부터 시작했다. 내부 수리의 수리를 거듭해 어디까지가 뼈대이고 어디까지가 마감인지 구분이 안됐으며, 석면으로 인해서 조사도 함부로 할 수 없었다. 석면과 겹겹이 덧대어져 있던 마감을 철거하고 건물의 뼈대가 드러났다.

The project began with uncovering the building's structural framework. Repeated internal repairs over the years had made it difficult to distinguish between the original framework and the finishing touches. Additionally, the presence of asbestos meant that even the preliminary inspection had to be carried out cautiously. After removing the asbestos and the layers of finishing materials that had been added over the years, the building's skeletal structure was finally revealed.

아마도 옛날 옛날 아주 먼 옛날, 중산층 이상이 살았을 법한 2층 집이 있었는데. 거기에 집이 좀 좁았는지 배면을 좀 증축하고, 그다음은 좌측면, 급기야 층도 하나 올렸나 보다. 마감을 철거한 1층에는 콘크리트 처마를 받친 콘크리트 서까래가, 2층에는 멋들어지게 감아올린 지붕 선이 나를 감동하게 했고, 군데군데 비어있는 슬라브가 또 다른 방향으로 나를 놀라게 했다. 그리고 3층, 3층은 놀랍게도 목구조였으며 상량문도 발견되었다. 그렇게 시대의 필요에 따라 변신해 가고 있던 이 건물이 또 다른 필요에 의해 새로운 시간을 담게 되었다.

Long, long ago, there once stood a two-story house likely inhabited by an upper-middle-class family. Over time, the house was expanded, first at the back, then on the left side, and eventually even an additional floor was added. During the demolition of the finishes on the first floor, concrete rafters supporting the concrete eaves were uncovered, while the elegant roofline of the second floor left a deep impression. However, the occasional empty slabs revealed further structural surprises. To my amazement, the third floor was constructed with wood, and an inscription beam was discovered. This building, which had evolved over time to meet various needs, was now set to capture a new era and purpose. 

사직단 복원으로 사직동주민센터 이전이 대두되었고, 그 대안으로 세종로자치회관이 선정되었다. 하지만 세종로자치회관은 기단부의 높이가 1.5미터나 되어 불특정 다수가 이용하는 주민센터로서는 부적합했다. 이러한 대지 여건을 고려하여 3층 건물이지만 엘리베이터를 설치하기로 했고, 그렇게 우리는 또 하나를 더해 1963년부터 이어온 이 건물의 새로운 시대를 열고자 했다.

The restoration of Sajikdan prompted the relocation of the Sajik-dong Community Center, and the Sejong-ro Community Center was selected as the alternative site. However, the Sejong-ro Community Center was not initially suitable for a community center due to its 1.5-meter high podium, making it inconvenient for the general public. Considering these site conditions, it was decided to install an elevator in the three-story building. In this way, we aimed to usher in a new era for the building, which has stood since 1963, by adding one more feature to enhance its functionality and accessibility. 

프로젝트를 진행하면서 기존 구조물을 최대한 살려 그 흔적과 함께 새로움을 더 하고 싶었으나, 구조 안전성 문제로 1층 처마의 보를 살려놓은 것으로 만족해야 하는 아쉬움이 있었다.

During the project, the goal was to preserve as much of the original structure as possible, blending its historical traces with new elements. However, due to structural safety concerns, there was the disappointment of having to be content with retaining only the beams of the first-floor eaves. 

언제가 될지 모르겠으나... 시간이 흘러 철거되지 않고, 차근차근 그 시대의 시간을 담아, 지금은 크고 대단한 것을 담지는 않았지만, 그 시간의 흔적이 담겨 크고 대단한 것으로 여겨졌으면 하기도 한다.

It is uncertain when it will happen, but hopefully, with the passage of time, this building will not be demolished. Instead, it will gradually encapsulate the essence of its era. Although it may not house anything grand or significant now, the traces of time contained within it may eventually be regarded as something grand and significant.

보통의 역사를 경험할 수 있어서 힘들지만 즐거운 프로젝트였다.

It was a challenging yet enjoyable project, as it provided the opportunity to experience ordinary history.
